Charlotte Nicholas, 64, of Oakland Park, Florida, tragically passed away October 20th in her home in Florida. She was the first born in Waterville, Maine, to William and Emily Nicholas on September 19th, 1951. Over the years, she always referred to herself as being the #1 daughter. She would identify herself to her sisters as “it’s #1 calling”!
She grew up in Augusta, Maine, attending Lincoln School, Buker School, and graduated from Cony High School in 1970. She then went on to pursue nursing as her career. She attended nursing school in Waterville and received her LPN degree. She then worked locally for many years at Togus and Augusta General Hospitals. She eventually moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fl, where she lived for the remainder of her life. She went back to school and achieved her RN license while continuing to work in the area. She then worked in various jobs - one being a critical care nurse in an ICU unit. Her most enjoyable job was working as a traveling nurse in order to live life to the fullest, satisfying her need to experience new adventures.
Charlotte loved the great outdoors. One of those adventures was to climb all of the 54 14,000 foot elevation mountains in Colorado which she completed in 1998. She loved her camp on Messalonskee Lake where she spent many hours fishing. There she taught many people her passion and loved seeing their excitement when they caught their first fish. She loved to go camping, going for rides and bringing her famous picnics - using everything leftover she had in the frig!!
She had some wonderful personality traits that will be cherished by all who knew her. She always accepted those she loved without being judgmental. Her quick wit and knack for telling stories were shared by many. She could be stubborn and serious on one side and then be hilarious and goofy on the other. She was, as we all say, quite a character!
She was predeceased by both her parents. She is survived by her sister Mary Nicholas of Winslow, Maine and her sister Marsha Birney and husband Rick of Centennial, Colorado; One niece, Olivia Hallstein of Portland, Maine, and a nephew Nicholas Birney also of Colorado. She is also survived by her longtime companion and friend Bruce Marshall of Oakland Park, Florida.
Charlotte will be cremated and her ashes returned to Maine. Her family will hold a burial and celebration of her life next Spring. She will be buried with her parents at Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield, Maine. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Charlotte’s name may be made to the All Saints Mission 3460 Powerline Rd. Oakland Park, Fl.33309.
Remember to be kind to others and when you smell patouille, think of Charlotte.
