John Gomes Pimenta, 88, of Fort Lauderdale, FL passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015. John was formely of North Dighton and Taunton MA.
He was born in Taunton, MA to Augustino and Sizaltina Gomes Pimenta and was one of five boys who grew up in Taunton and worked in the family business of wholesale produce.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was named 2004 Veteran of the Year.
He married Alice Carvalho in June 1948 and worked as a truck driver for Naragansett Brewery until his retirement. He loved to travel and found nothing more important than his wife, Alice, who predeceased him on August 10, 2014, and his son John E. Pimenta. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, North Dighton, MA and St. Pius X Catholic Church, Fort Lauderdale, FL.
John always gave a laughing smile and a helping hand. He devoted much time to revitalizing and remodeling the VFW Post in North Dighton, MA and getting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial placed in front of Town Hall before moving to Fort Lauderdale, FL.
He is survived by his son: John E. Pimenta.
There will be a public viewing at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2511 North Ocean Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33305 on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM when the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be lead by Father Gerald R. Morris.
Interment will follow at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 North State Road 7/441, Lake Worth, FL 33467, at 1:15 PM in the afternoon. Those going to the cemetery should take Lane 3 for the committal service with Military Honors by the United States Army.
