Robert Horton Obituary

Robert Edwin Horton, 79, died on January 1, 2020 at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Boca Raton, FL following a brief illness.

Edwin (Bob) was lovingly raised by his maternal grandparents, Beulah Belote Blackburn & Finis Emmett Blackburn, and his Aunt, Hilda Mae Blackburn Koonce, all of Mayfield, KY.

Mr. Horton was the Valedictorian of the 1958 class at Mayfield High School, Mayfield, KY.  He graduated “Cum Laude” with a B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN in 1962.  While at Vanderbilt both as a student and after graduation as well, he worked at the University’s computer center.  He left employment at Vanderbilt University to pursuit an illustrious career in the computer software industry.

He was an accomplished organist and was so devoted to the instrument that he installed, in his home, an organ of such high quality that it would have been suitable for use in many institutional settings.  Mr. Horton was active in his church and was a founding member of the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  Funeral arrangements at the cathedral will be announced at a later date.

Edwin (Bob) was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Alice Blackburn Horton Hodge and W.H."Speck” Horton,  both of whom were originally from Mayfield, KY.  He is survived by five  first cousins:  David Blackburn Koonce of Mayfield, KY; Karen Koonce Cosby of Frankfort, KY; Robert Emmett Koonce of Senoia, GA; Nancy Horton Patterson of Winston Salem, NC; and William Ellis Horton of Crossville, TN.  Edwin (Bob) was the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Horton, who served for 24 years as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mayfield, KY.
